Options for classifying/grouping risks

In the context of risk identification, risk classifications can support the identification and structuring of risks. Since a large number of supply chain risks exist, there are various approaches to categorizing them.

Examples of classifications of risks

The table shows some examples of classifications of risks discussed in business literature.

The classification helps to show a risk landscape and to present the individual risks systematically. Due to the complexity of a supply chain, it is necessary in many cases to prioritize supply chain branches and thus, for example, select critical actors or products and analyze them in more detail (Böger 2010, p. 58). Accordingly, appropriate thematic priorities are to be set depending on the overriding objective.

The result of the first SCRM phase should be a structured catalog with all the supply chain risks recorded (Ziegenbein 2007, p. 77f.).
